What is a Solar PV Diverter?

A Solar PV Diverter is an intelligent device that automatically redirects surplus solar electricity from your PV array into your home’s immersion heater or storage tank, rather than exporting it to the grid at low SEG rates. This maximises self‑consumption of the free energy you generate and delivers hot water at no extra cost.

Key Benefits

•Maximise Savings

Capture up to 90 % of your surplus solar output for free hot water, rather than earning only a few pence per kWh under Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).

•Reduce Carbon Footprint

By heating your water with solar‑generated electricity, you avoid burning gas or electricity from the grid—cutting household CO₂ emissions.

•Seamless Integration

Works with most existing PV installations, immersion heaters, and thermal stores; no major rewiring or extra equipment required.

•Smart Controls

Adjustable diversion settings let you prioritise water heating when you need it, and safely shut off diversion if tank temperature exceeds your set threshold.

How ECO 4 Grant Funding Can Help

Under the UK Government’s ECO 4 programme, qualifying households can access up to £10,000 in grant funding for energy‑saving measures—this can include Solar PV Diverters when installed as part of an energy efficiency upgrade package.

•Who’s Eligible?

•Owner‑occupiers, private tenants (with landlord sign‑off) and social housing tenants

•Households in receipt of qualifying means‑tested benefits (e.g. Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support) or

•Households on low incomes (under £31,000 p/a) with an EPC rating of D‑G, or who are vulnerable to the effects of a cold home via the Flex Scheme.

•What’s Covered?

ECO 4 grants are awarded based on a survey of your home’s energy performance. A Solar PV Diverter can be included alongside other measures—cavity or loft insulation, heat pumps, new heating controls—to deliver a fully funded package with no out‑of‑pocket cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the diverter work if my immersion heater is on a timer?

Yes. The diverter can override existing timers to capture surplus solar energy whenever it’s available, then return control back to your timer once the tank is hot.

Batteries store electricity for lighting and appliances, but you’ll often still generate surplus PV that can’t be stored. A diverter uses that extra energy for hot water, further reducing your bills.

Typical households save £150–£250 per year on hot water costs—and with rising energy prices and SEG rates remaining low (around 5 p per kWh), that saving will grow.

Most installations take just one day on site, with no disruption to your hot water supply.
